Even if we somehow managed to convert enough farmland into cold resistant hot houses, the cost of doing that conversion and the loss of output from less space being usable would cause the cost of food to skyrocket and the majority of people couldnt afford the food.

These would freeze and there would be a massive food shortage that would cause much of America to starve because the country couldnt possibly import the required food from other countries. Very little of the US would be able to have homes that withstand that level of cold, and the 99% of American farmland is out in large fields. If America fell into a cold like in this game it really would fall.

It's not until we discover Winterhome, with it's Generator destroyed and everyone dead, that we fall into a critical do-or-die scenario. They were working as part of a large network of other teams working to build and prepare a number of Generator Cities, to then be populated later. They had their orders, and they were initially going to plan. it's not a state of emergency for them either. In the real world, this is just a 1 week (hopefully) storm system that will pass and everything will go back to normal.Īnd finally, in the early objectives of the A New Home scenario. This is the scenario in which the game takes place. The Little Ice Age, as it's called, lasted for a number of years, with winter being extremely harsh and bitterly cold, with very mild summers in-between. Second, the events in-game are launched after a prolonged period of harsh winter weather, not just a (hopefully) one off storm. While it makes a funny joke, comparing the current Polar Vortex to the scenario of the game is not going to be fair. The simple acts of generating and containing heat were extremely lacking by comparison to today. Insulation techniques were nowhere near as effective as they are now. They didn't have NatGas for heating, and eletrical lighting was a newfangled concept that the rich were only just beginning to toy with. Everything is fueled by either Coal or Steam (which is made from. At least, we can hope.įirst of all, Frostpunk takes place in the Victorian era. Let's hope that nobody is starving or suffers from frostbite. But let's hope no one has to die because of the storm. If the US would not collapse without using child labour, triage, soup, new faith or new order, then one has to think again why we have to rely on such strong, if not extreme, measures in the game to survive. I don't think the US would collapse just because of the coming storm. Now that the temperature of the US could fall to -50C (the cold is coming), and that the Frostpunk world is real and possible, I have to think about whether we are really that desperate in the Frostpunk world. However, leaving on overdrive for too long will result in it exploding.Originally posted by Tomato & Egg:I think the current storm in the US forces me to think about the game setting again.Īll along, I have been assuming that we are in a state of emergency in the Frostpunk world.

Generator Overdrive causes the generator to run hotter than normal to produce warmer temperatures.Warmer buildings have a significantly lesser chance of making citizens sick.Increasing the level of the Generator also increases the consumption of Steam Cores. Each level consumes more coal than the last, but provides better heat to the city. There are four levels to the Generator that can be researched through the Technology Tree. Automatons also use the Generator to "refuel".Steam Hubs can be built further away from the generator and provide additional heat. Generators can also supply power to Steam Hubs.Without roads, the Generator cannot provide heat to distant buildings. Roads are required to connect all buildings to the Generator. It provides heat to surrounding buildings and is the lifeblood of your community. The Generator is strategically positioned at the center of your city. If used for too long, this will cause the entire thing explode, finishing the game instantly. Overdrive can be employed to combat extreme cold, but it will also stress the Generator. Players also balance the survivors' demand for heat with the limited output capacity of the generator also ensuring the Generator. They require Coal to function, so the player will need to continuously stockpile it. Generators provide heating in its immediate area in a radial fashion.

In addition to its importance, it is not required to be built by the player as it is always available at the start of the game. The Generators are Frostpunk's most important furnace building.
